# External Communications

> How Righthand handles outbound communication on your behalf

## Overview

You have full control over whether your Righthands can reach out to people outside your team. The **External Comms** setting on each Righthand's detail page lets you decide how outbound communication is handled — whether that's emails, messages, or calls.

## External Comms Modes

Each Righthand can be set to one of three modes:

| Mode | Behavior |
| --------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Allow** | The Righthand can reach out to anyone freely, without prior approval. |
| **Ask** | The Righthand must request approval before contacting someone new. You explicitly whitelist each person they're allowed to communicate with. |
| **Never** | The Righthand cannot initiate any outbound communication. |

### Configuring External Comms

Navigate to the [Team page](https://teams.righthand.ai/teams/people) and click on the Righthand you want to configure. The **External Comms** toggle is on the overview page.

## How "Ask" Mode Works

When a Righthand is set to **Ask**, it will request your approval before reaching out to a new contact. Once you approve a contact, the Righthand can communicate with that person going forward without asking again.

This gives you visibility and control over every new external relationship your Righthand initiates, while keeping communication smooth once a contact is approved.
